Proving the axiom, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” Pasadena resident Dianne Patrizzi attained a major personal goal Sunday when she was crowned the 2012 Doo Dah Parade Queen at the American Legion hall in East Pasadena.

Appearing before a crowd that parade organizer Patty Hurley said was the largest the tryouts had ever attracted, Patrizzi shocked and awed the crowd in her guise as Princess Patrizzi Intergarlictica.

“She really looked stunning, wearing a dress made out of gold glitter like you see on the back of a Sparkletts water truck,” said Hurley. “She looked like glittering gold, which got everyone’s attention, her hair was poofed up, and she had little stars in her hair and her eyes were made up like Elizabeth Taylor in ‘Cleopatra.’ She danced like a robot in front of a psychedelic light display, and she looked fabulous.”

The legion hall was filled with intense competitors for the crown, including Crystal Lightener who sang Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” with mock sincerity while drinking out of a bottle and pretending to wipe cocaine from her nose. And controversy nearly erupted during a performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” by a woman portraying an Icelandic princess, who got upset and nearly stormed off the stage when the competition’s judges created an impromptu and wild mosh pit during her rendition.

While the “raucous, wild and crowded affair” raised several thousand dollars, to be donated to the Legion for charitable distribution, Hurley noted that it’s the competition’s inherent sense of hope that keeps the tryouts and the parade alive and growing each year.

“Dianne, our winner, tried out for several years and played Princess Hahamongna Cowabunga and did a mating call that silenced the room, yet didn’t win, last year,” said Hurley. “We always encourage people to come back and try again, because you never know when it’s gonna be your year.”
